Sept. 13 Francois Leguat Giant Tortoise Reserve

We had a fun day tour of the island but the highlight was the Giant Tortoise Reserve.

The bush of the reserve mimic what Rodrigues was like 300 years ago.  Five species of giant tortoises once existed on the Mascarene Islands, of which two were found on Rodrigues (Cylindraspis peltastes and C.vosmaeri).  Initially abundant, all species became extinct shortly after man arrived on the islands, with the last giant tortoise being seen on Rodrigues during the late 1700s. The Reserve is replacing the extinct species with related ones.

Conservation status: vulnerable
Weight: around 250kg
Length of carapace: 120cm
Long-lived, known to reach over 100 years
