Aug. 17 – Independence Day in Wanci

Indonesia has quite a turbulent history over the past 500 years and they enjoy celebrating their independence which was fairly recent.  We saw them practicing their military marching through town and weren’t disappointed when their ceremonies unfolded in the morning with much fanfare in front of a cadre of medal-wearing officials.  Local school kids were grouped by age around the field as older cadets or military (I wasn’t sure) goose-stepped to raise the Indonesian flag.  The marching band performed, including majorettes, there was lots of singing and plenty of speeches by uniformed officials.

Several hours later it was time to wander the streets of town, guide in tow, before going to lunch at a local restaurant.
