Day 31 – Dec. 22 – 5 hours on Rob Roy Glacier track

Our last full day in Wanaka and weather was perfect for the Rob Roy Glacier walk to view Mt Aspiring Glacier.  Sam joined us from the hostel, although his youthful energy got him up and back about an hour ahead of us.  It took us five hours but it was worth all the knee pain.  The narrow windy path was well maintained and the rock slides were well marked.  The gentle up and down of the track was mostly in shade, a good thing on this hot sunny day.  This was an avalanche danger area and I found it a bit scary to walk under the enormous overhanging boulders.  NZ is free of snakes and venomous insects but what could get you killed are rocks, landslides and avalanches.
We enjoyed lunch at the end of the trail watching the 261 meter waterfall.
