Day 17 – still Dec. 8 – Lyttelton farmers market

I had to see Lyttelton’s farmers market and Jim had to buy some sausages.  This little port town was closest to the 2011 earthquake epicenter and sustained a lot of damage, but it didn’t dampen their spirit.  The farmers market had a party atmosphere and it was full of people eating and talking and performing and selling.  We both agreed Lyttelton was our favorite little community so far.

Now about those whitebait fritters and butties.  Butties is a sandwich of white bread spread with butter and pieces of meat (think Wonder bread).  Whitebait is truly disgusting – tiny immature herring that look like worms – made into butties or fritters.  Jim said “The thought of eating minnows in scrambled eggs is unappealing, superseded by the fact that it’s served on white bread.  It didn’t taste too bad though.”
