August 1 – the stairs at Mbavatu Bay

We stopped overnight at Mbavatu Bay because we heard about the stairs.  I was expecting stadium-type stairs straight up the hill but these were well-crafted wood stairs with plenty of turns making an easy ascent into a well manicured plantation.  We passed two young men coming back to their village after a day of fishing who pointed us in the right direction.  David, Suzy and I had an invigorating walk to the lookout for a clear view of Bay of Islands.   Unfortunately we missed the other trail that lead to the top of the highest hill where the two houses were.   We also missed meeting the caretaker for the yacht club where we anchored.  This is a freehold island, privately owned and not requiring sevusevu.  The grounds everywhere were well tended, like being in someone’s enormous backyard.  We peeked into the windows of the yacht club, found the shower and diving platform but no one to let us in.
