April 25 – predawn ceremonies on Anzac Day

It’s Anzac Day, a national holiday similar to our Veteran’s Day. We were up at 5am in order to get down to watch the dawn parade in the chilly morning air.  Hundreds of Kiwis lined the streets of downtown Whangarei to watch the parade walk past.  It was a solemn, even emotional event.  Eventually we fell into step with everyone else behind the parade and listened to the speakers honor the wounded and dead from so many wars.  Since WWI thousands of Kiwis lost their lives fighting foreign wars.  Many volunteered because it was the only way they could see the world.

Getting up so early made it a very long day.  We stumbled through the rest of the day trying to get the boat ready to go back into the water.  Jim was cleaning the hull and I was up and down the ladder vacuuming and cleaning all the tiny spaces in the boat that never see the light of day.
