June 1 – Taiohae, Nuku Hiva

We had a great time touring some of the archeological sites around the island.  Our guide, Richard, spoke great English, and the other couple was from Germany, he being a travel writer.  It poured half the day but you just don’t care here because everything dries eventually.  The people here are very friendly and casual.

Richard even serenaded us with local music

this is a new church  but almost across the street is a very old one with beautiful wood carvings which follow

one of the locals with full-body tattooing

even the roosters are beautiful

they were playing bacchi ball in the middle of the road

the polynesian canoes had arrived in this village to celebrate before leaving for HI and i found this discarded lei

downtown Hatihue where they’re playing bacchi ball

on our way back to Taiohae we had to stop for pigs crossing the road.  Jim was salivating.
